Annual Reed Dance - Tour

DAY TRIP

Umkhosi Womhlanga, or Reed Dance ceremony, is an annual Zulu and Swazi tradition held in the first weekend of September. Thousands of unmarried and childless Zulu/Swazi girls and women travel from their villages to participate in this event. The girls wear traditional attire including beadwork and colorful sashes. As part of the ceremony, the young women dance bare-breasted for their king, and each carries a long reed, which they then deposit as they approach the king.
